AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn Public Library is helping residents protect their homes and families by offering four radon detectors available for checkout through the Alabama Radon Library Program.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. It can enter homes through cracks and openings in the foundation and, over time, may accumulate to levels that increase the risk of lung cancer. Because the only way to know a home’s radon level is to test it, Auburn Public Library now provides community members with a simple, convenient way to do just that.

The radon detectors can be checked out free of charge with a library card. During the two-week checkout period, residents can test their homes to discover radon levels.

“We’re excited to offer this valuable resource to our community,” said Ashley Brown, Engagement & Outreach Librarian at Auburn Public Library.

The Alabama Radon Library Program expands access to radon testing equipment through public libraries across the state, helping increase awareness of radon and encouraging homeowners to learn more about potential risks in their homes.

The detectors are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Because only four detectors are currently available, patrons are encouraged to contact the library to check availability before visiting.
